The Laurel Witch PDF Pattern - Heirloom Rag Doll with Cross Stitching

This PDF pattern includes written instructions on how to make a
Basic Rag Doll Body (doll body, arms and legs) with Cross Stitch features (face and florals).

Some hair and clothing tips/ideas are included, but your inspiration will be called upon to finish your doll in your own creative vision and voice.

Basic to Intermediate sewing skills are recommended. If you are new to sewing or new to sewing soft sculptures, I would suggest following the sewing pattern instructions carefully and first practice by making a doll or two in scrap fabric or leftover cross stitch fabric pieces before cross stitching the details. You can always cross stitch on your practice dolls afterwards and you might even find you like that method better.

This Rag Doll pattern is designed to use 32 Count Zweigart Evenweave or 32 Count Linen –
stitching with 2 strands over 2 (or 16 count stitching 2 strands over 1).
Changing the 16 or 32 Count cross stitch size is not recommended as the cross stitching will not fit in the doll pattern pieces. I do not recommend using an Aida cloth, as the fabric may be a bit too stiff for doll making. The evenweave fabric is the best choice in my opinion, especially if you’re new to making soft sculptures.

The finished doll without hair is approximately 36 cm (14") tall.

For the backstitches in the face and arms, I suggest using one strand of floss.
I suggest this design could be stitched on any colour fabric of your choice.

Materials needed:

  • A printer to print this whole PDF file, or just the pattern page
  • Scissors to cut out each pattern piece (paper scissors of course!)
  • Pencil or chalk pencil to trace the pattern
  • Cross stitch threads – see chart provided above or choose your own colours
  • 32 Count Zweigart Even Weave or 32 Count Cross Stitch Linen (or 16 count) – approx 50 cm * 68cm (20” * 27”).
  • Approx ½ yard or ½ meter of black linen (or colour of choice) for doll legs
Please note: The fabric dimensions are approximate. You might get a few dolls out of the fabrics or if you can, purchase more. Doll making is addictive!
  • Doll stuffing: natural wool or cotton stuffing or Poly-fil.
  • Sewing machine and sewing needle and thread
  • Sewing scissors
  • A chopstick and/or hemostats for turning your sewn fabric doll inside out and/or poking out the corners
  • Yarn or wool roving for hair
  • Nice to have: a longer needle for sewing arms onto the body and a thicker thread to sew them on.

Downloading and Printing Instructions:

Your file will be available to you after your payment is confirmed.
You will automatically be emailed a download link for you to download and save the file to your computer. I'd suggest the easiest way to download it is on your computer, not a phone, as you are limited in the number of times you can download the file.

Once you save the file to your computer (check your download folder if you can't find it), you can either print it out at home, print the pattern page instead of the whole pdf if you'd like, or send the file to your local business office supplier printer.

Terms of Use for this Rag Doll Pattern:

*** You are welcome to use this basic doll sewing pattern as a starting point for making and selling your own rag dolls, but please be considerate and mention my pattern when you first start selling, even if you have altered it. For example: It would be appreciated if you would share a link to this pattern in my shop stating you used this pattern to get you started the first time you share your creation(s). It may seem like a basic pattern, but if you are a maker, you will fully understand how it took many trials and errors, with lots of doll models made and scrapped, to finally get to this point where it is now sold as a pattern. ***

- Please do not share this file. Please direct anyone interested to my shop instead!
- No refunds are available for digital files. If you have an issue with the digital file, please contact me and I will fix any issues and resend the file if needed.
