Cross Stitch Pattern PDF - Miss, Mrs. or Ms. Wildwood – One Hundred Years Ago
Thank you for purchasing this pattern and I hope you enjoy stitching this piece as much as I enjoyed designing it for cross stitch.
Miss, Mrs. or Ms. Wildwood – One Hundred Years Ago came from the blending of two projects - the 1920’s inspired woman is from a painting I’m currently working on, and the flowers were inspired by the Baret Ware Tin bowl pattern, Wildwood, hence the name for this cross stitch pattern. There will be a circular cross stitch pattern with this floral motif coming soon as well.
In line with my latest patterns on Women’s Rights, I’m looking back here at 100 years ago. I live in a 1927 heritage apartment in the capital of Canada on what has been named, Prime Minister’s Row. I picture the women who walked in and out of the same doors and used the same tiny elevator as I do – yes, we still have one elevator that has the metal screen that when it closes it shoots you up like a rocket, much faster than our newer elevator does. My office/studio, where I’m typing up this pattern, was almost certainly once the maid’s quarters, with its own bathroom and a separate entrance door. Perhaps this fictional character, Miss Wildwood, was the maid who tended to the family who lived in our apartment. In the past, apartments like ours were referred to as apartment houses because they really are the size of small houses, but even so, I can’t begin to imagine having a live-in maid in such a place, or anywhere for that matter.
Maybe though, she was Mrs. Wildwood, a woman who was part of the “high society” here in the capital of Canada. Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, Tommy Douglas, and Shirley Thomson all lived here at one point, so it’s a possibility. Maybe she lost her husband or divorced and went by Ms. Wildwood. Did they do that back then? I’m sure a divorced woman might have been quite the scandal whispered throughout the floors and echoey hallways of this building, especially after reading some interesting (not so flattering) stories on women in Ottawa’s High Society 100 years ago. In any case, I think about these things often, as you can see if you read up about me on my website. Of course, I’d like to think this Wildwood woman was like me. A Wildwood Wild Woman. A progressive woman. A woman standing up for Women’s Rights. A woman who has never been one to follow the rules and doesn’t worry about what others think, even when the world wants us to think and behave in a certain way, then and now.
Where were we then and where are we now? Are we where we want to be? If the answer is no, then what can we do? Continue standing up for women all over our city/country/world, as women had to 100 years ago, when and if they were able to. I recognize and honour my privilege to be able to do so today, 100 years later with the ghosts of those women at my side; I take a stance through my artwork and designs, no matter the size of the audience I may reach and despite those who oppose my views and my work.
Please note: This listing is for the PDF file only and does not include the materials for cross stitching. My prices are listed in Canadian Dollars (CAD).
As for many of my new patterns, I share a stitched view from my pattern software first, because my creative inspiration and supply of ideas surpass my ability to stitch them fast enough. When I am able though, I stitch the patterns that call to me the most, and then I add the photo updates to my listings, Please connect with me on Instagram @thelaurelwitch to see my wips. As always, please feel free to wait to see if I stitch and finish this piece, or stitch it if this pattern speaks to you with a love at first sight or if it resonates from deep within.

Downloading and Printing Instructions:
Your file will be available to you after your payment is confirmed.
You will automatically be emailed a download link for you to download and save the file to your computer. I'd suggest the easiest way to download it is on your computer, not a phone, as you are limited in the number of times you can download the file.
Once you save the file to your computer (check your download folder if you can't find it), you can either print it out at home, print one or two pages instead of the whole pdf if you'd like, or send the file to your local business office supplier printer.
Design Size:
16 stitch/in - 90 x 119 Stitches
14.2 cm x 18.7 cm (5.6 x 7.4 in.)
Fabric:
Make sure to add enough fabric. If you are stitching this pattern on a different size than a 16 ct fabric, please note the stitch count and calculate your finished design size before you start stitching.
Do make sure you have enough fabric to add a border all around the design. I’d suggest adding 5 cm – 7.5 cm (2-3 in) around each edge.
Colour: I suggest this design could be stitched on any colour.
Notes:
I had so many ideas/options for text that went along with this pattern, but I had to settle on one. I’ve included the alphabets I used below in case you want to change the text to whatever is meaningful to you.
I provide one example additional skin tones that could be used but please use whatever colours you prefer.
Additional Resources: If you are new to cross stitching and would like some help to get started with stitching from a counted cross stitch pattern, I have listed some resource links on my blog at thelaurelwitch.com and will keep updating it whenever possible.
