The Laurel Witch Cross Stitch Pattern PDF - Beware of Artists

Thank you for your interest in this pattern and I hope you enjoy stitching this piece as much as I enjoyed designing it for cross stitch. I’m taking a break from The Laurel Witch to concentrate on my artwork and will be shutting down my Shop soon. Please do keep in touch on Instagram @thelaurelwitch and visit my website at lauradaub.ca

You may have seen this quote recognized as propaganda on posters from the 1950’s, or perhaps attributed closer to the source, Queen Victoria, but according to Snopes, it was adapted from a letter Leopold I, King of the Belgians, wrote to Queen Victoria in 1845.

Leopold’s letter with the words in question in bold:

St. Cloud, 10th October 1845.

My Dearest Victoria - All you say about our dear Albert, whom I love like my own child, is perfectly true. The attacks, however unjust, have but one advantage, that of showing the points the enemy thinks weakest and best calculated to hurt. This, being the case, Anson, without boring A. with daily accounts which in the end become very irksome, should pay attention to these very points, and contribute to avoid what may be turned to account by the enemy. To hope to escape censure and calumny is next to impossible, but whatever is considered by the enemy as a fit subject for attack is better modified or avoided. The dealings with artists, for instance, require great prudence; they are acquainted with all classes of society, and for that very reason dangerous; they are hardly ever satisfied, and when you have too much to do with them, you are sure to have des ennuis...

Your devoted Uncle, Leopold R.

In any case, the quote is a great one that in my mind just needed to become a cross stitch, with my take on it giving a nod to stitching, as well as painting. I hope you enjoy stitching it – there are two versions to choose from!

Yours truly in all things mystical and magical,

Laura Daub

Downloading and Printing Instructions:

Your file will be available to you after your payment is confirmed.
You will automatically be emailed a download link for you to download and save the file to your computer. I'd suggest the easiest way to download it is on your computer, not a phone, as you are limited in the number of times you can download the file.

Once you save the file to your computer (check your download folder if you can't find it), you can either print it out at home, print one or two pages instead of the whole pdf if you'd like, or send the whole file to your local business office supplier printer.

Thread:

*** Please note that I would suggest purchasing 4 skeins of black for the first version. If you stitch the second version you will need 7-8 skeins of black. Instead of DMC 310, I used Leo & Roxy Floss named Chalkboard and needed just over 4 skeins.

Design Size and Fabric:

148 x 162 Stitches - Do check the stitch counts and sizes above the key to decide how big you want it to be. I normally stitch my patterns 2 over 2 on 32-count Zweigart or Laguna evenweave or linen fabrics, but for my sample I chose a vintage looking 14 ct Aida placemat with stitched borders that I found in a thrift shop.

Make sure you have enough fabric to add a border all around the design. I’d suggest adding 5 cm – 7.5 cm (2-3 in) around each side.

Colour: I suggest this design could be stitched on any colour.
