The Laurel Witch Cross Stitch Pattern PDF - Black Sampler November - Hex Signs
I designed it as a piece under my Little Little Witches series that could be stitched in all black for Black Sampler November, created by Jacob de Graaf of Modern Folk Embroidery for the cross stitching community. Cross stitch pattern designers and cross stitchers can share any patterns they have been working on that are stitched in all black. Well, be still my witchy heart! For this piece I included the use of beads that add an extra sparkly element to the design if you’d like, and of course, please do feel free to stitch it in any colour you’d like.
My mother-in-law comes from a Pennsylvania Dutch Mennonite family in Southern Ontario, Canada, and this is the second pattern I’ve made that is inspired from her heritage. In reading up on the lives of Mennonites, I came across information about Hex Signs, a form of Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art and was fascinated by it, as I absolutely love Folk Art from all different cultures.
From Wikipedia: Barn paintings, usually in the form of "stars in circles", began to appear on the landscape in the early 19th century and became widespread decades later when commercial ready-mixed paint became readily available. By the 1950s commercialized hex signs, aimed at the tourist market, became popular and these often include stars, compass roses, stylized birds known as distelfinks, hearts, tulips, or a tree of life. Two schools of thought exist on the meaning of hex signs. One school ascribes a talismanic nature to the signs; the other sees them as purely decorative. Both schools recognize that there are sometimes superstitions associated with certain hex sign themes and neither ascribes strong magical power to them. The Amish do not use hex signs.
A little serendipitous side note to this story - My father just recently gave me some family documents and I found out that my great-grandmother was Pennsylvania Dutch as well! I had no idea, but it sure makes these inspired patterns even more meaningful to me.

Downloading and Printing Instructions:
Your file will be available to you after your payment is confirmed.
You will automatically be emailed a download link for you to download and save the file to your computer. I'd suggest the easiest way to download it is on your computer, not a phone, as you are limited in the number of times you can download the file.
Once you save the file to your computer (check your download folder if you can't find it), you can either print it out at home, print one or two pages instead of the whole pdf if you'd like, or send the whole file to your local business office supplier printer.
Design Size:
122 x 154 Stitches
The pattern includes finished sizing for stitching on 14, 16 or 18 count fabrics.
Fabric:
Make sure to have enough fabric. Please note the stitch count options above the key and calculate your finished fabric size before you start stitching. Do make sure you have enough fabric to add a border all around the design. I’d suggest adding 5 cm – 7.5 cm (2 - 3 in) around each edge.
Colour: I suggest this design could be stitched on any colour. I stitched mine on 32 count Zweigart Linen, hand-dyed with green acrylic paint and fabric medium, stitching 2 over 2 - total design size 19.4cm x 24.4 cm (7.6" x 9.6").
