The Bootlegger’s Wife by Laura Daub
In honour of my Scottish-born grandmother, married to my rough and tumble, full of swear words, steel town grandfather from Leeds, who made a life in Canada, where he grew his construction company and she raised their children. While I can’t share any hard proof, it was known that he was a bootlegger, a rum runner, I suppose during prohibition times. There are some stories that have been told and forgotten, with some fuzzy details, but involving some well known gangsters, but alas, the truth may well just be buried with my grandparents.
I knew my grandmother as a huggable, warm, white-haired lady with a sweet disposition and an apron always over her day dress, but when I watched the series, Peaky Blinders (RIP Helen McCrory who played Aunt Polly), I couldn’t help but give imagination to perhaps how she may have lived as a bootlegger’s wife. Although I know it was probably nothing like some of the horrifically violent moments in the tv series, I can certainly picture her in a different way now - not as a sweet old lady, but perhaps as an elegant, stylish woman, who knew and saw more in her life than I could ever imagine. I truly wish I could ask her all about her life in the 20’s and 30’s.

"People need art in their houses. They don't need Bed Bath and Beyond dentist-office art. They need weird stuff" -Ezra Croft.

Since 2012, creating prints of my original paintings has always been important to me to make sure my work can reach many audiences at affordable prices. I feel everyone should be able to have the choice to fill their homes with artwork that has grabbed their attention, perhaps reflects their unique taste and lifestyle, and in the case of my work, maybe even conjure up some feelings of magic, myth and wonder like it does for me when I create it.  For that reason, I offer digital prints of my work whenever possible, including this painting. I retain the rights to this painting's image and will  continue to use it for prints and other purposes. Thank you for your understanding and your support of the Arts!
