Although it’s not a traditional sampler, I based this design off the traditional appliqué Folk Art of Penny Rugs, aptly named as old pennies and coins were used as templates to cut out wools and other fabrics and hand-stitched with the blanket stitch. Not typically used as rugs though, these decorative mats were used as candle mats, and on mantles and accents throughout the house… a wonderful way to both decorate and not waste anything. I chose to add Memento Mori, in honour of those who came before us and as a nod to All Saints Day\/All Soul’s Day on November 1st.
